At first, the senior pup didn't seem too thrilled about having another dog in the home. His dad was doing his best to comfort him, giving him a sweet cuddle from behind while the puppy buzzed around him.

How To Introduce a New Puppy to a Senior Dog

There's no doubt these two are going to become fast friends, but if you're looking to introduce a little puppy to your senior dog, there are a few things you can do to make the transition a little easier, according to experts. 

The American Kennel Club says you should go into the introduction knowing that this isn't going to be like what you see in the movies. With that in mind, you should watch for signs of aggression, the experts share, including snarling, snapping, lunging, barking, biting, and growling. 

To prepare your older pup, you'll want to keep their routine as close to what it is as possible, make sure you're showing them attention, and give them one-on-one attention. Then it's just time, patience, and creating a safe environment. Looping in your veterinarian to help troubleshoot any issues that might come up. 

Hopefully, in no time, the new puppy and your senior dog will become cuddle friends—and a home filled with even more love, like this one.

I find this clip hilarious, full of suspense (what will he do?!), and also, too relatable. Every cat parent has bought the fur children something fun at some point only for them to completely reject it in exchange for the bag or box it came in.

In Nimbus's case, it happened to be the towel Mom laid on the concrete to lure him. Of course, he didn't fall for it but I have to give him major props for at least investigating the thing.

In the end, it's Nimbus's world, just like it's your cat's world. If you tried this trend and were also disappointed just remember: there's nothing we can do to change their opinion on anything, ever—unless you lay down a towel, bag, or box. Then you're golden!

I, too, have a tri-color female Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and this is the exact behavior I deal with day to day. Is it a genetic thing or a girl thing? Whatever it is, it's a pain in the butt waiting for them to decide what they're doing!

If you have no idea what could be the causing it, you're not alone. It's something many dog owners deal with. That's why Logan Rago, the groomer behind the TikTok account @dogsbylogan, which has more than 3.2 million followers, took to his profile and shared one of the biggest mistakes he sees pet parents make when caring for their dog's coat. The good news? It's completely avoidable.

The No. 1 Mistake That's Wrecking Your Dog's Coat

Can you believe that according to Rago, not bathing your dog enough is the reason why your dog's coat is looking bad? It may sound like a plot twist as pet parents are often told not to bathe their furry friends too much. However, Rago disagrees. In fact, he is begging dog moms and dads to make bath time a regular affair. How regular? "[Your dog] needs to be washed every 21 days or three weeks," Rago says.

To help you remember to do so, Rago recommends thinking of your dog's coat as a cycle.

"Much like us, if we don’t wash our hair, we build up oils, dead skin, etc.," Rago points out, explaining, "After three weeks, your dog’s skin and coat have all that buildup."

If you don't remember how long it's been since your pet was in the tub, Rago says you shouldn't be too worried. However, he recommends starting a regular bath time schedule ASAP to prevent your four-legged family member from developing irritation, matting and itchiness. He suggests considering a bath for your dog as a monthly to-do.

How To Properly Bathe Your Dog For Coat Perfection

As with humans, Rago explains that dogs can benefit from using both shampoo and conditioner (designed for their specific coats, of course).

"The oils and dirt need to be stripped and cleaned with shampoo," Rago explains, adding, "Conditioner is just as important as shampoo [because it gets the good oils back in.]"

While you can groom your dog at home by yourself, you don't have to take on the task yourself if you don't want to. Instead, you may prefer to have a groomer bathe your dog, especially if your pup isn't a huge fan of water or baths.

If you go that route, Rago says asking if your dog needs a haircut while you're at the groomer's isn't a bad idea either. That way, you can make sure you're doing everything you can to help your pet's coat look good.

"Not all dogs need them," Rago says. "But if yours does, it depends on length and maintenance, but if you send them to a groomer for a bath, you might as well get it done when needed."

“For senior dogs every little change matters,” says Amber Rea, DVM. “It is very important that you don't delay or just wait out any health concerns. Prevention is really key at this age.”

Each dog is an individual, and has unique health challenges and needs as a result. “In general, older dogs require a higher protein content in their diet as they age to help maintain their muscle mass,” says Allison Miller, DVM, senior lecturer at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. “They may have mobility issues that may stem from underlying orthopedic or neurological reasons.”

She adds that senior dogs may also deal with endocrine diseases, like diabetes or hypothyroidism. “Older dogs benefit from routine visits to their veterinarian once to twice a year for a complete physical examination and laboratory tests run on blood and urine to screen for any underlying systemic disease,” Miller advises.

It’s a stretch to say that putting your dog on a supplement regimen will help them live longer or avoid getting sick altogether. However, doctors say that the right supplements may help with things like achy joints, skin woes, and cognition issues—you just want to consult your vet first. 

“Talk to your veterinarian to figure out the best way to target your dog’s health needs,” says Nancy D Welborn, DVM,associate professor at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine.

Your vet will likely have specific recommendations based on your dog’s health and any medications they’re on. Though, once you get the green light, there are a few things you'll need to contemplate as you shop. 

What to Consider When Choosing Supplements for Senior Dogs

Veterinarians say there are a few important factors to keep in mind when buying supplements for senior dogs. 

Certification

Miller recommends searching for supplements with National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) certification. “Pet owners can look for this to see that the pet supplement product has been verified by unbiased third-party testing to meet standards of safety and quality, ensuring adherence to rigorous manufacturing and labeling practices,” she says.

Note: It's important to point out that there are plenty of great supplements that don't contain this label, but it's a nice service to rely on if you're unsure about a brand.

Dosage

The amount you should give your pet is crucial to talk to your vet about. “There are therapeutic dosages for different supplements based on a dog’s body weight which can be calculated and recommended by the dog’s veterinarian,” Miller explains.

Relative Cost

Remember, the relative cost is more than the amount you pay for a bottle. “Some cheaper brands are cheaper because they aren't as potent,” Rea says. “I have seen owners ‘save’ money by buying a cheaper brand, only to realize they have to give 10 pills to equal one of the more expensive brands.”

You can even keep playing with several family members.

Bubbles

Not all dogs love bubbles, but many get into the act of "hunting" them down. TikToker @rachelcbee shared the sweetest video of her Golden Retriever gleefully popping bubbles from a bubble machine. “Who knew that this $10 bubble machine from Target would keep her so happy and have her attention for, like, 45 minutes?” she said. “I highly recommend getting your dog some bubbles. It’s so cute.” Note: Standard bubbles work, too—this just literally saves your breath.

Find It

This game is pretty self explanatory. You take a toy your dog loves and hide it somewhere in your house. TikTok user @itsmisterlincoln shared a challenging Find It game they invented with their Border Collie, Lincoln, where they even create “diversion noises” to throw him off the scent. Lincoln was able to find his toy in a drawer, but not all pups will be able to sniff that out. Because of this, you’ll want to tailor this activity to your dog’s abilities as this game taps into your dog's natural scavenging skills.

This game is pure entertainment, and it’s easy to do. Just bounce a ping pong ball on the floor and let your dog go for it. “Run out of things to keep your dog busy? Try a ping pong ball,” wrote @zuniandzepplin, alongside a cute video of their dog chasing one around. This game allows your dog to "chase" a toy in a safe way. Just keep a close eye on your dog while they are playing this and pull the ball away if they start trying to chew it up.

Kiddie Pool

This game is perfect for hot summer days and leans into your dog's playful nature. Just get a hard plastic kiddie pool and fill it with a hose, allowing your pup to play in it. If you want it to splash out a little, dog trainer @caitlinecruz also suggests filling the pool with plastic balls and hiding treats below or adding sand and toys for digging.

That's why Brandon Pons, general manager at Pawsability Dog Club, says it’s crucial to be clear with your groomer about what you want your pup to look like after their service. Here’s what he suggests for Bernedoodle owners so they have they can prevent a grooming disaster.

Why Can Bernedoodles Be Tricky to Groom?

There are a few reasons why Bernedoodle haircuts can be tough. “Bernedoodles present grooming challenges primarily due to their highly variable coat types,” Pons says. 

This breed also has what’s called a combination coat, which means they have a blend of different textures, including straight and curly, he says. The different lengths that are common with a Bernedoodle’s coat makes it especially prone to matting, Pons notes. 

“This variability makes it difficult to apply a one-size-fits-all grooming approach,” he explains. 

Here’s What to Expect

A lot depends on whether your pup’s coat is being maintained properly, but Pons reveals a typically grooming appointment for a Bernedoodle looks like this:

Step 1: Consultation. “This is where the groomer inspects the coat to determine whether or not the owner’s preferred style can be achieved while also assessing the dog's behavior,” Pons says. “The groomer will also check for any health concerns—for example, age, skin irritation, injuries, ear infections, or parasites that may require veterinary attention.” 

Step 2: Grooming. “We recommend that Bernedoodles get groomed every six to eight weeks with a full-service groom that includes brushing, bathing, high-velocity drying, trimming—often in a “teddy bear” or “puppy cut” style—nail trimming, and ear cleaning,” Pons says. “Their coats vary from wavy to curly and due to their tendency to mat easily, regular professional grooming is essential.”

Why It's Crucial to Keep Your Bernedoodle Well Brushed

Maintenance brushing is “essential” for Bernedoodles, according to Pons.

“Regular brushing should be a serious consideration for anyone thinking about bringing home a Bernedoodle,” he says. “It's not just about keeping the dog neat. It’s about their health and comfort.” 

Mats can form easily in a Bernedoodle’s dense, textured coats and can pull tightly on the skin, leading to inflammation, sores, bruising, and discomfort, according to Pons. “The trapped moisture and lack of airflow under mats can cause hot spots, bacterial or fungal infections, and other issues that often go unnoticed until they become severe,” he adds. 

How to Get the Grooming Results You Want

Pons recommends bringing in pictures of what you’re hoping to achieve. “They give your groomer a clear visual reference,” he says. “However, it's even more important to learn how to clearly communicate your expectations and to understand your dog's individual needs and limitations.”

He also suggests learning the blade length or desired coat length in inches. This, Pons says, is “far more effective” than telling your groomer to take about half of your pet’s coat off as a freshly washed and dried coat may appear fuller, he explains.

In addition, Pons discloses you should set aside some serious time for this appointment. “It’s crucial to recognize that long-haired breeds like Bernedoodles often require 2.5 to 4.5 hours to groom from start to finish,” he says. “Managing expectations regarding your dog’s comfort and tolerance for this duration is key to a safe and positive grooming experience.”

Ultimately, good communication is clear to making sure you and your pooch get the grooming experience you’re after.

"This is for emergencies only, so you’re only going to use this when your dog is in imminent danger—running toward the street, running toward something scary or toward a car," Cezanne explains.

How to Introduce the Emergency Recall Word to Your Dog

As with other commands, Cezanne says you'll need to introduce the word to your dog gradually and with plenty of treats. However, it's possible to get dogs to understand the word in as little as four weeks. She shared her four-step guide and some pitfalls to avoid, below.

"It's easy to teach," she assures.

Before you get started, Cezanne says you'll need to grab an ultra-high-value treat. She's using cheese for the video, but Cooper's emergency recall treat is sardines in water.

Cezanne stresses that the most important thing is that the treat is "something they never get other than this exact situation."

1. Treat Inside 10 Times Per Day

That's it. That's the step.

“For the entire first week, I want you to just give your dog a treat when they’re in the vicinity of you," Cezanne says. "You don’t have to say much.”

You're basically whetting your dog's appetite to learn something new (literally and figuratively, and yes, pun intended).

2. Pick An Emergency Word and Treat Your Dog Inside 10x Per Day

“The second week is where things get fun," Cezanne explains.

More fun than treating your dog fish 10 times per day for a week?

"Now, we’re going to introduce the actual word," Cezanne says.

Cezanne reminds people that the emergency recall word "has to be a word that you do not use on a daily basis with your dog. For example, I use, 'Cooper, hurry.'"

Cezanne says you'll want to say the emergency recall command 10 times per day and treat your pup every time. Bonus points if you mimic panic (because that's what you'll likely be doing if your dog is running toward a busy road in the wild).

3. Randomize and Test Your Dog

Next, it's time for some daily pop quizzes!

“I want you to hang out on one side of your house and use the treat," Cezanne instructs people. "Obviously, you’re going to always use the treat and call your dog over using that emergency word.”

Cezanne states that it's crucial to stick to the script by using the word once. For example, say "Cooper, hurry" not, "Cooper, hurry, hurry!" The American Kennel Club also advises people to avoid chasing their dogs because they'll think it's a game, which emergency situations are not.

4. Take It Outside For a Week

Finally, graduate to the great outdoors. Cezanne suggests using a long leash, such as a 10-foot one, and practicing the emergency recall command outside, rewarding your dog for following it each time.

“Not only will this save your dog’s life, [but] this is just one of the most important things you can teach any dog," Cezanne says.

Dinner dances aside, it is convenient that many of the things that keep my pets motivated are already in our home. Peanut butter sans xylitol is a favorite of my dogs, and the Internet constantly lets me know that they are not alone in their nuttiness for the nut butter.

Putting peanut butter in Kongs or—my Chihuahua's new favorite—Toppl toys is nothing new. Still, I realized people were making peanut butter enrichment walls during a recent social media scroll. I was confused and a bit grossed out, but I was eager to try it if it kept my dogs' tails wagging (away from me during lunch). Here's what happened when I tried a peanut butter enrichment wall on my two senior dogs, plus what I'd do differently next time.

What Are Peanut Butter Enrichment Walls for Dogs?

Peanut butter enrichment walls for dogs are sort of like donut walls at a wedding, except you're doing it for your doggie, not for Insta. As the name implies, people are spreading peanut butter on their walls (or lick mats or paper they hang on a wall) and letting their dogs lick to their little hearts and taste buds' content.

By doing so, it keeps pets engaged—and, get this—sometimes even calm—during grooming sessions. Wags Doggie Day Care in the UK posted a video of some pups licking peanut butter off a wall, and it's clearly a highlight of their day.

How I Tried the Peanut Butter Wall for Dogs and What Happened

I have an insatiable appetite for keeping my dogs entertained and happy, so I decided to try the peanut butter wall. Spreading it on the bathtub wasn't an option for me, though, as my husband gets triggered by bath crayon drawings on walls by our two children (he's real fun at parties—to be fair, it is hard to get off). I can only imagine his thoughts on peanut butter.

Since we don't have a lick mat, I opted for some paper and the process was beyond basic.

Directions

1. Spread it. I grabbed some paper and spread on peanut butter that didn't have xylitol in it. It was just like making lunch sandwiches for my kids, except I didn't have to cut them into triangles.
2. Hang it. I affixed the paper to the kitchen wall so I could watch as I ate my own lunch, hopefully without dogs begging for food.
3. Observe. I let my dogs take it from there.

Sarge, my Beagle, didn't need any prompting. He went right to the paper and began licking it, creating a slobbery peanut butter painting in the process. My Chihuahua was beyond confused and watched, despite my prompting her to go over to try it. Not one to force feed, I stepped back and ate lunch. Neither came over to beg, though Sarge did move on after about 10 minutes and started licking Topanga's. It was actually a role reversal of what usually happens during meal times, where she finishes first and then wants to try his food (and therefore meal times are...closely monitored).

Topanga wound up licking what was left over once Sarge walked away. Later that day, she was suddenly very interested in the wall (though there wasn't peanut butter on it anymore because I removed the paper). I put some peanut butter in her Toppl instead, and she was delighted.

What I'd Do Differently Next Time I Try the Peanut Butter Enrichment Wall + Tips for Pet Parents

Our first try at the peanut butter enrichment wall was interesting and a good start, but I'm going to make tweaks next time I do it. Hopefully, my mistakes give you a leg (or paw) up if you want to attempt this viral trick at home.

1. Get a lick mat for my Beagle. Since Sarge loved the peanut butter wall, it's time to upgrade to a lick mat. These mats are reusable and better for the environment, plus they leave paper for us to use for their intended purposes. I also want to see if my Chihuahua would engage better with a lick mat as it's a good idea to experiment with different textures/ways to create a peanut butter wall to find out what your dog likes best.
2. Introduce it better. My Chihuahua's lack of engagement with the wall surprised me. Would she have been more excited if I had let her sniff and start to lick the mat first? I definitely recommend taking this step with your dogs and seeing if it makes a differnce.
3. Retreat to the Toppl if needed. If Topanga prefers peanut butter in her Toppl, we'll do that! There's no need to force the wall if she or your dog isn't into it.

I will absolutely do this viral enrichment hack again with my dogs, and I think I've finally found a way to keep my Beagle happy. It was a treat for them and me because I got to eat lunch without anyone touching me.

Tracy Fosterling is a dog foster mom who went viral on TikTok after sharing that she always takes the Pet Corrector on her walks. Fosterling wrote in the caption of her post that the product "has saved my dogs and I on our walks so many times."

“When I was volunteering at the first shelter I got involved with, we used Pet Correctors during play groups,” Fosterling tells Paw Nation. “This is the first time I had seen them used, and I immediately bought my own.” 

But for all of its handiness, Pet Corrector isn’t something most people are familiar with. Here’s what it is, plus why it can be so helpful.

What Is Pet Corrector?

Fosterling explains Pet Corrector is a $13 can of compressed air. “It produces a loud hissing or horn sound to distract a dog or animal's behavior,” she says. “It doesn't hurt them, [it] just produces a loud noise.”

In the case of an off-leash dog attacking you or your pet, Pet Corrector can help scare the other dog and hopefully cause them to back off. The corrector was designed by animal behavior experts as a way to immediately correct a behavior.

How Do You Use Pet Corrector?

Pet Corrector suggests spraying the Pet Corrector to distract the dog. Then, give your dog a command, followed by a reward. 

The can is only designed to be used in short, one-second bursts, at a distance greater than a meter, according to the company. Note: If you’re using Pet Corrector to correct your own pet’s behavior, the company says it should be sprayed away from their face. 

Why Pet Corrector Is Good for Walks

Fosterling calls Pet Corrector a “safety tool,” noting that it’s especially helpful to ward off animals that may be a threat. “I always want to make sure I have something to keep things away,” Fosterling says. 

Unfortunately, Fosterling reveals she’s had to use Pet Corrector “several times” when unleashed dogs have run up to her pets, noting that it helped to keep her dogs safe.

Forsterling recommends that other pet parents consider getting a Pet Corrector to carry around on walks too. “Safety is the number one priority on walks, and any tool that's going to help you feel safe and, in turn, keep you and your dogs safe during walks is important,” she states. “No one wants a dog fight to break out while they're trying to enjoy a walk with their dogs, and this helps in doing that.”

It’s apparent by her human’s reaction that they didn’t know Hippo was expecting! In the video she walks up and says, “Did you have a calf after all?”

Hippo is just casually standing in the pasture with her fluffy little calf by her side. Honestly, there is no denying they are related based on the similar brown and white markings on their faces, particularly around the eyes. However, determining exactly how to care for your furry friend's coat can feel like a cat-and-mouse game. Not everything you hear from fellow pet parents or read online is true and so many cat grooming myths exist. One South Carolina-based groomer, Whitney Bullock, recently snipped away at a common cat grooming myth. Read on to hear what it is, plus what she and reputable sources have to say about it.

Is It OK to Shave a Cat?

It's a myth that shaving a cat's fur is always bad. In fact, shaving may sometimes be necessary, such as if a cat is having surgery and will need a catheter. VCA Animal Hospitals also notes that cats with severe matting may also require shaving. Matting is tangled fur that can lead to skin irritation and other health issues if left untreated. However, shaving a cat's coat isn't something to try at home. You should always let a professional groomer do the job.

Does Shaving a Cat Ruin Its Coat?

Shaving a cat doesn't necessarily ruin their coat. In some cases, shaving may be necessary to address fur-related issues and help the cat's coat. A primary reason to have a groomer shave a cat's fur is matting, which Modern Vet points out can lead to skin irritation and infections.

Bullock, a groomer with more than 300K followers on Instagram and TikTok combined, has been vocal about dispelling the myth that shaving a cat is bad for their coat.

"One of the most common and critiques we get is that shaving a cat ruins their coats," Bullock shares in a recent TikTok video. In a separate Instagram post, Bullock stressed, "It doesn’t ruin the coat. It doesn't hurt their coat. It grows back."

She also says shaving a cat's fur can help prevent matting, writing, "Most importantly, [shaving] prevents painful matting and pelting for some cats! Do you think we would still be in business if we 'ruined the coat' of every cat that we shaved?"

On TikTok, she even pointed out that cats have their coats shaved for procedures, like spaying or surgeries requiring catheters.

"If shaving a cat’s coat ruined it…Do you think you would shave spots for spays or surgeries, or shave spots for catheters?” she asked.

Shaving cats for matting and surgical procedures is medically necessary. However, Modern Vet also discloses that shaving a cat's coat is generally not recommended since kitties use their "mane" as protection from elements, like the sun.

Reasons Why a Cat May Need to be Shaved

While it's not recommended to shave your cat just for looks, there are some instances when it may be needed and helpful, and understanding them can save you from second-guessing whether you're doing right by your beloved cat. Here are some times when experts say it's necessary to shave a cat's fur.

1. To Prevent Matting

On Instagram, Bullock mentions matting as the most crucial reason to shave a cat's fur. VCA Hospitals agrees this statement is sometimes true, stating that long-haired cats who often get large mats in their fur or struggle with self-grooming may benefit from periodic shave downs. However, VCA Hospitals reports that regular brushing can usually help prevent matting.

2. When Your Cat's Matting Is Severe

Matting can trigger flea infestations, pain and skin irritation. While prevention is the best treatment for matting, some cats may have severely tangled skin. Beverly Hills Vets reports shaving may be necessary if careful combing doesn't work.

3. To Treat or Prevent Infestations

Beverly Hills Vets says shaving can also put the kibosh on bad flea infestations because the bugs can live deep within a cat's fur. It can also make it easier to apply medications to your cat that ward off issues, like mites and ringworm.

4. Your Cat Gets Hairballs

A lion cut, like the one Bullock shows on the cat in her TikTok video, can assist kitties with frequent hairballs, per Beverly Hills Vets. Hairballs can develop if cats frequently swallow their own hair while self-grooming. However, VCA Animal Hospitals recommends daily brushing as a better first step.

5. Your Cat Has Trouble Self-Grooming

Beverly Hills Vets points out that older or obese cats may struggle to self-groom, so trimming or shaving can keep them sanitary, especially around their backside. In these instances, it can help lower your cat's risk of having poop stuck in their fur—an obvious win for both you and your pet.

6. When Undergoing a Veterinary Procedure

Bullock shares that vets shave cats for surgeries, spaying and catheter insertion. The benefits of shaving a small area of your cat's fur for these procedures outweigh the cons because they let their care team do their jobs safely.

7. Your Cat Needs a Summer 'Do

VCA Animal Hospitals concedes that some cats may require haircuts in the summer months, but it's crucial to consider these "shave-downs" and not full shaves.

Bullock notes in her TikTok video that the cat's caregiver sends the pet to her a few times per year for a lion cut to keep its fur short. While we don't have the full context on why, the team at Chewy stresses that lion cuts have pros and cons, including many of the reasons listed above (matting and self-grooming issues). However, these cuts can also make temperature regulation more challenging and remove a line of defense for the skin. Plus, some cats don't enjoy the process. Your best bet is to talk to a veterinarian you trust about shaving and whether there are other approaches to try first.

Naturally, Raava is quite curious about the new household additions, and the cuteness that unfolds when she tries to play with the puppies is incredibly heartwarming.

As the clip starts, Raava meets Hash Brown, and it’s love at first sight! She gently sticks her nose and paw through the bars of the gate, and she is met with instant affection from the tiny puppy. They sniff each other and play a little game of footsies through the slats. The little puppy’s tail is wagging a million miles a minute, and if they could climb through the gate, chaos would surely follow!

Due to Raava’s size, the family is using a pet gate to keep her and the puppies separated. She is a big dog and does not know her own strength around the little ones—but there is no mistaking her love for them!

Unfortunately, allergies could be to blame—especially for Doodles. TikTok is packed with posts dedicated to Goldendoodle allergies, with many pet parents saying they wish they knew this was behind their pup’s itching sooner.

To learn more about the types of allergies that commonly affect Doodles—and which ones might be most likely to impact your pup—we spoke with Ashley Rossman, DVM, co-owner of Glen Oak Dog and Cat Hospital in Glenview, Illinois. She reveals that she's not shocked that Doodles are experiencing allergies.

“In general, veterinarians see a lot of allergies in Golden Retrievers,” she explains. “Therefore, it's not surprising that allergic issues arise in Goldendoodles too." (Goldendoodles are a crossbreed of Golden Retrievers and poodles, just in case you didn’t know!)

This Allergy Could Be Behind Your Goldendoodle’s Itching

According to Rossman, Goldendoodles can have a range of allergies, including seasonal reactions to things like mold, pollen, and weeds. Though, if your pup is struggling and it doesn’t seem to be seasonal, she says it could actually be caused by a food allergy.

“Food allergies are common,” Rossman shares. “The most common food allergen is poultry or chicken.” However, she notes that beef, dairy, wheat, lamb, soybean, corn, eggs, and walnuts can also be to blame. 

It seems weird, but itching is a sign of a food allergy in dogs. Other symptoms, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), include your pooch chewing, licking or rubbing themselves to relieve their itchy feet, abdomen, face, or anal area.

There are a few other symptoms to look out for as well, per the AKC: 

• Ear infections. These happen in about 50% of dogs with food allergies and can sometimes be the only symptom.
• Diarrhea or vomiting. This happens in 30% of dogs with food allergies.
• Bronchitis or anaphylaxis. This is rare, but is worth being aware of. 

Your pup could also develop skin lesions, bacterial infections, or yeast infections due to their food allergy. 

What to Do If Your Goldendoodle Is Itching

Itching can be a sign of a range of allergies, including a reaction to something your Doodle came into contact with, like your sweater. For that reason, it’s tricky to assume right away that food allergies are the main problem.

Rossman shares you can give your pup Benadryl to help with their itching, but explains that will usually only stop it for a short period of time. She also says if you think your pup has a food allergy and you keep feeding them the same thing, the problem will continue. Therefore, it's worth switching up your pup's food to find out if that makes their itching stop.

Rossman recommends giving it a few days to see if things get better. If not, it’s time for an evaluation. “If your pet is itching constantly or just seems generally uncomfortable, it's wise to bring your pet to the vet,” Rossman suggests. “This will help avoid secondary bacterial and fungal infections,” Rossman says. . 

If your vet suspects your Doodle has a food allergy, they’ll likely prescribe anti-inflammatory medications and put your dog on an elimination diet. They can also help guide you through the process from there so your fur family member can get some much-needed relief.

Comet, the 3-year-old Golden Retriever, is very food motivated, and we cannot get enough of her antics. This sweet girl does the cutest little dance around the living room before dinner, and you can practically see the smile on her face!

"Decompression walks" have been all the rage on TikTok lately. They involve letting a dog run free. TikTok trainers say it fulfills your dog's biological needs, and some pet parents swear it eases their dog's anxiety.

My dog, Sarge, who was rescued from a laboratory, is a highly anxious pet, which is why the idea made me nervous, especially since I live in an area with far more car traffic than foot and paw traffic. You may have similar feelings, but if you scroll further (like I did), you'll see TikTok trainers have safety tips and caveats to help with things like that.

After learning more from watching the trainers' videos (and seeing regular dog moms like me do decompression walks with their pets), I decided to give it a go and I followed a TikTok trainer's decompression walk advice. The results were instant and incredible.

What Are Decompression Walks for Dogs?

Decompression walks are off-leash walks through nature. "Decompression walks should consist of a dog performing natural behaviors, such as running, sniffing, digging and simply having the feeling of being free," explained Who's a Good Boy Industries (@whosagoodboy_industries), a canine professional in a TikTok video. "This plays a major role in fulfilling the dog’s biological needs.”

While they're different from the more commonplace structured walks, the TikTok influencer says these types of walks still have their place. "It’s not about a decompression walk or a structured walk," the post's caption says. "One is a need for biological fulfillment and the other is a need for safety. Allow one and work on the other!"

In other words, yes, keep your dog on a leash when walking them by a busy street, but find a safe, quiet space for them to run free when it's time for a decompression walk.

How to Do a Decompression Walk

Note: Decompression walks vary. Influencer and dog and human mom of @emmaandleos explains she takes her dog for a 20-minute walk or "sniffari."

"Let them lead the way for 20 minutes and soak in the smells, sights and sounds," she suggests, adding her dog, Leo, barks less and is calmer when he gets a decompression walk.

Why Decompression Walks Are a Game-Changer

I planned to try a decompression walk when the weather was sunny. However, after sleeping in (the horror) on a rainy Sunday and delaying Sarge's breakfast (truly, the horror), things in the Mayer household were off to a sideways start. I decided it was time for a reset, and there was no time like the present to attempt a decompression walk.

I'm not sure that I would've felt comfortable giving my childhood beagle—a runner who never lost his innate desire to hunt—a chance to do a decompression walk. However, Sarge is good off-leash, attached to me and not into chasing wildlife. I trusted him.

We went to a woodland area near my house that was safely away from Sunday church traffic. I didn't have a long leash, but I dropped the shorter one I was using—I wanted to be able to grab it if need be, like Avery did. At first, Sarge stood still for a bit until he realized he was off leash and slowly made his way over to the baseball bleachers at the entry to the area. While the walkway through the trees is around a quarter mile, I doubt we got more than 200 yards in 30 minutes. After he was finished exploring the bleachers, Sarge walked over to a tree and sniffed the same spot for the rest of the time. Meanwhile, I took in the blooming cherry blossoms—my favorite part of spring. It was certainly a taste of slow living.

When we got home, the chaos ensued with my two young sons up. We piled in the car for our Sunday ritual of grabbing takeout from a local deli. When I returned, I noticed I had made the mistake of leaving the closet door open. Sarge usually helps himself to shoes (or clean diapers). However, he was peacefully sleeping on the couch when we got home. He didn't even beg for breakfast. I, too, felt calmer and more patient, having a much longer fuse with my kids (and cat who has recently taken to batting the remote off of a shelf). Move over, deli. I think I just found a new favorite Sunday ritual.

The exact number of treats varies by the size of your dog and their weight. But it’s best to follow the instructions on the package. Extra-small dogs (five to 10 pounds) should be limited to one to two treats a day, but large dogs (60+ pounds) can nosh on up to six of these snacks in a day.

What Do Groomers Say About the Fluffy Dog Blowout?

Even though a blowout is often included in a full-service bath or groom, some groomers might charge extra for very large dogs, or those who have a lot of undercoat that needs to come out.

Hilary Pagan, a pet groomer at Hillbillys Grooming in Douglas County, Oregon, admits that not all dogs love blowouts (after all, they are loud and windy!). However, most dogs will tolerate them, and it must feel good to get all that loose hair out of their coats.

Pagan says she does have a few canine clients who seem to enjoy the blowout process though and that they probably realize the results are well-worth a little noise and wind!

Can You Do a Fluffy Dog Blowout at Home?

If you want to give your pup their own fluffy blowout at home, you can! However, if you're nervous about trying it, Pagan recommends getting some training first by a professional so they can give you tips and show you how they go about it.

“The blowout process is more difficult than you would think,” she explains. “Different techniques for different coat types and temperaments of the pet make a huge difference. A professional dog groomer or bather will take all of this into consideration to get the best results.”

Before you attempt doing a blowouts at home, you need to make sure you have the right equipment. What a Pro Groomer Wants You To Know About Fluffy Dog Blowouts

As with anything you do, remember safety always comes first—for both you and your dog!

That's why Pagan reveals it's not a good idea to use human grooming equipment on dogs, mostly because they get too hot and a blow drier can burn your dog’s skin.

“Some breeds of dogs have more sensitive skin,” Pagan shares. “Damage could be done without the pet parent knowing and turn into an unwanted issue later on.”

Pagan also recommends using ear protection when blowing out a dog with a high-velocity dryers since they are quite loud. Earplugs or ear protection headphones will do the trick, and you can also gently tuck a few cotton balls into your dog’s ears to muffle the sound (don’t forget to take them out when you’re done!).

If your dog is very hairy, you might even want to wear some eye protection as well as there’s nothing worse than dog hair in your eyes! This groomer has figured out a great solution—wearing a mosquito net hat keeps flying hair out of her eyes, nose, and mouth!

However, grain-free dog foods are currently surrounded by all sorts of controversy. In fact, an ongoing FDA investigation continues to look for possible links between grain-free diets and a type of canine heart disease called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Because of this, researchers are worried that grain-free dog food is causing more harm than good.

If you've never heard of DCM, it causes a dog’s heart muscle to weaken and become enlarged, which means it can’t pump blood efficiently. The walls of a dog's heart also become thinner. AS a result of those things, dogs who have DCM can sadly develop congestive heart failure. Signs of DCM in dogs include tiring during exercise, difficulty breathing, low energy, coughing, collapsing, and even sudden death.

Conflicting messages about grain-free foods and their potential link to DCM can make it hard to know if grain-free dog food is a safe or healthy option for most dogs. To help clear up the confusion, we reached out to veterinarians to get the latest research and advice about grain-free diets for dogs.

What Is Grain-Free Dog Food?

Grain-free dog food does not contain grains, such as corn, wheat, rice, oats, and barley. Various types of food can be grain free, including dry food (kibble), canned food, and raw food. Because dry foods in particular need some kind of carbohydrate or fiber to bind them together, grain-free kibble uses other plant-based ingredients for grains, like potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, lentils, chickpeas, beans, and tapioca.

Dry foods aren't the only products that contain those ingredients, some canned grain-free dog foods do as well. However, many canned and complete-and-balanced raw diets are free from both grains and grain alternatives like peas, lentils, potatoes, etc. Such diets are protein-heavy, with few plant-based ingredients.

Why Did Grain-Free Dog Food Became Popular?

According to Dr. Enio Sanmarti, emergency veterinarian and medical director at VEG ER for Pets Fort Lauderdale, grain-free diets became popular due to marketing that aligned with human food trends, like gluten-free items and paleo diets.

“Pet parents were told that grains are fillers or allergens, which isn’t typically true for most dogs,” Dr. Sanmarti explains. “As concerns about health implications have grown—particularly the possible link to DCM—we’re seeing a shift back toward grain-inclusive options.”

Lisa P. Weeth, DVM, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, also points out that the trend toward grain-free diets took off after the large pet food recall in 2007, when rice and wheat products contaminated with melamine and cyanuric acid ended up in pet foods worldwide.

Soon after, small- to medium-sized pet food companies began replacing more traditional dry pet food ingredients like rice, wheat, and corn—which have been used in commercial dog foods and treats for mores 100 years—with peas and lentils, and marketing their foods as “grain free,” or with “no rice, wheat, or corn.”

“The implication was that grains were ingredients to be feared, when in reality, the ingredients themselves were not the problem—it was unscrupulous raw material providers and food fraud,” Dr. Weeth reveals.

What Vets Are Saying in 2025

In 2018, the FDA announced it was investigating reports of a rise in cases of DCM seen in dogs that were eating certain types of pet food, especially grain-free diets that contained high amounts of certain ingredients, namely legumes like peas, lentils, and chickpeas.

That same year, researchers from three different universities jointly authored a paper published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Association titled, “Diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs: what do we know?"

Now, in 2025, seven years after the FDA announced its investigation, the research continues, but we still don’t have concrete answers.

“The exact cause of diet-induced cardiomyopathy is still unknown, but there is a very clear association with diets that include a large percentage—about 40%—of legumes, such as peas, lentils, and chickpeas,” Dr. Weeth notes, sharing that the published studies on diet-induced cardiomyopathy have been mixed, but case reports in affected dogs tell a different story.

“I have personally seen and helped manage dogs that developed DCM both with and without signs of congestive heart failure that were being fed high-legume diets (both commercial and fresh food) that had resolution of DCM and return to normal heart function with diet change and supportive care,” she discloses.

According to Dr. Weeth, the vast majority of dogs eating high-legume diets are fine, but a small percentage can develop diet-induced cardiomyopathy. Though, currently, only a few risk factors have been identified, including:

1. Dogs eating less than the package recommended intake for a food. For example, the label says to feed your dog 4 cups per day and the owners are feeding 3 cups or less. Dogs that eat less than the recommended amount are at a higher risk for nutrient deficiency.

2. Dogs with underlying gastrointestinal orders that prevent them from properly absorbing essential nutrients.

3. Dog breeds that are predisposed to genetic-based cardiomyopathies or have higher requirements for essential nutrients required for normal heart health. For example, larger breed dogs have higher requirements for certain nutrients compared to small to medium breeds.

Do Grain-Free Diets Have Any Benefits?

Grain-free diets can be beneficial for dogs with diagnosed grain allergies, although Dr. Sanmarti points out that grain allergies are rare in dogs. In fact, only about 1% to 2% of all dogs have any type of food allergy, and the percentage that are allergic specifically to grains is even lower. If your pet has a food allergy, it will trigger an immune response, causing symptoms like itchy skin, hair loss, and skin and ear infections, as well as sometimes vomiting or diarrhea.

In some case, certain dogs might have intolerances to specific food ingredients, including grains, though. However, food intolerances do not involve the immune system and are not the same as allergies, but they can cause troubling symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and gas.

The Bottom Line

Grain-free diets can be more costly than grain-inclusive dog foods, but they are not necessarily healthier for most dogs unless they have allergies or intolerances to specific grains. When looking at grain-free diets, consider the type of ingredients used and their proportion in each specific formula.

“I think it is important to distinguish between ‘grain-free’ and ‘high-legume’ diets,” Dr. Weeth says. “Diets that include potato or sweet potato are safe and healthy, with little to no negative effects seen when cooked correctly, and for dogs with documented or suspected allergies or intolerances to wheat, rice, or corn, the avoidance of these grains can be necessary to manage skin or gastrointestinal signs.”

In the end, both vets we spoke to say that breeds with a genetic predisposition to DCM are more vulnerable if fed a high-legume, grain-free diet. Some higher risk breeds include Golden Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Great Danes, Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, and Newfoundland dogs. If you have one of these breeds, they suggest talking to your vet about the best diet options for your dog.

If your dog is currently eating grain-free food without issue, there’s no need to panic. If your dog does have an allergy or intolerance to grains, the benefits of feeding a grain-freed food might outweigh any potential risks. Additionally, some grain-free foods do not include any of the “suspect ingredients” (peas, lentils, and chickpeas). Many commercial canned (wet) foods, as well as complete-and-balanced raw diets, also do not include grains or other carbohydrates.

“If you are feeding a potato or sweet potato-based grain-free diet to your pet and your dog has been doing well with it, then I am not concerned,” Dr. Weeth states. “If it is a high-legume, grain-free diet and your dog is eating close to the package’s recommended amounts, is free from any underlying or chronic gastrointestinal issues, and is not a breed that may be predisposed to heart issues, then I’m not too concerned about high-legume grain-free diet either.”

However, if your dog is eating a high-legume diet and any of the three risk factors are present, Dr. Weeth recommends changing their diet, even if your pet outwardly appears fine. Dr. Sanmarti agrees, saying it’s always worth discussing with your vet—especially if your dog is one of the at-risk breeds. “A gradual switch to a grain-inclusive diet might be the safer long-term move,” he explains. “If changes are needed, transition slowly over seven to 10 days to avoid digestive issues.”

Sweet Pea’s mom, @theparrotlady, took a few minutes out of her day to dress the bird in an adorable red tuxedo. When the staff saw the parrot, they were instantly smitten.

However, lately, people have started raising questions and concerns that their hyperactive dogs are displaying ADHD symptoms. Seeing how there's been a rise in diagnoses of ADHD among adults and children as clinicians learn more about the condition, is that really the case for dogs too—and what gives?

In a recent Instagram post, trainer Zak George, who has more than 423K followers on Instagram, points to a large Finnish study of 11,000 dogs that reports that "nearly 1 in 5 dogs displayed pronounced inattentive behaviors, and about 15% exhibited significant hyperactivity and impulsivity, far beyond typical puppy energy."

George unpacks the study in an Instagram post and provides actionable Do's and Don'ts for what's fueling your dog's hyperactivity.

What's Fueling Your Dog's Hyperactivity?

"Like humans, these traits were more common in younger dogs and males, with social isolation amplifying the symptoms," George says in his post.

George adds, "The environment plays a substantial role. Dogs left alone frequently exhibited increased hyperactivity and attention issues, highlighting the importance of enrichment and social engagement."

It makes sense, right? Dogs are social. They love and miss us and have tons of physical and mental energy to burn after being left alone for their version of "too long."

Other Reasons for Dog Hyperactivity, According to Zak George and a Large Study

George notes there may be other reasons for your dog's hyperactivity based on research—breed differences being one.

"Dogs historically bred for active roles (like terriers and working breeds like German Shepherds) showed higher tendencies toward hyperactivity and impulsivity, while companion breeds showed lower levels," George reveals. "Interestingly, breeds not specifically selected for intense tasks often scored higher in inattention, which is evidence that selective breeding can shape canine cognition significantly."

George stresses in his post that it's important not to chalk everything up to a dog's breed, though.

"Every dog is an individual, and breed alone never tells the whole story," he states.

Case in point?

"Dogs displaying extreme impulsivity or inattention often showed coexisting anxiety or fear-based behaviors, so there could be a potential underlying neurobiological connection," George shares. "This mirrors findings in human ADHD, where anxiety and compulsive behaviors often coexist."

Now, a quick caveat: Your dog doesn't have human ADHD if they have hyperactivity. "It’s important to clarify that 'ADHD-like' doesn’t mean your dog has human ADHD," George explains in his post. "It’s an analogy that helps us understand their behavior better without anthropomorphizing. Recognizing these behaviors allows us to better support dogs struggling with focus and impulsivity, and improve their quality of life through targeted, humane training."

The Do's and Don'ts of Working With Your Hyperactive Dog

Hyperactivity in dogs can be frustrating, but George emphasizes it's important to remain a positive force.

"[The study] underscores the critical need for compassionate, positive, neuroaffirming training methods rather than outdated, punitive approaches," George explains. "Aversive techniques, such as leash corrections or shock collars, have been shown to heighten stress and exacerbate behavioral problems, making ADHD-like symptoms worse."

On the flip side, George shares, "Structured, positive, enrichment-focused approaches help these dogs channel their energy constructively, significantly improving their focus and emotional stability...This evidence supports what many trainers and behaviorists already advocate: understanding and positive engagement, not punishment, bring out the best in our dogs."

TikTok trainer Sara Ondrako also previously shared some actionable tips for parents of hyperactive dogs, suggesting:

• Increasing mental enrichment by feeding your dog a meal in a puzzle toy or ball.
• Helping your dog get quality sleep in a quiet, dark and comfy spot
• Increasing activity that is both physical and mental. "Using the brain and body together can be much more satisfying to your dog," Ondrako says.

Hester’s human introduced her to water early in life, when she was a young kitten, and now that she’s an older cat, swimming is just part of her everyday life. According to her mom, the key to getting your cat to enjoy the water is to start them out with water-based playtime sooner rather than later.

The best part of this particular swimming kitty and her pool adventures has to be the shark-shaped life vest her mom makes sure that she wears. It helps Shark-Kitty stay upright in the water and also allows her to swim for a longer time, so she doesn’t get too tired treading water!

I did a deeper dive into Hester and found that she is a Siamese cat and in general, the breed is a fan of water! Hester’s mom rinses her off after she swims in the pool to free her furry friend from chemicals in the water. And lastly, her eyes really are just that blue, and the videos are not altered to make them appear bluer to match the water!

Recently, @bougiecattleco shared an Instagram video of their newest calf trying to moo—and we cannot handle his level of cuteness!

What Is the ‘Be Right Back’ Method for Stopping Separation Anxiety in Dogs?

If you haven't heard of this specific method, it comes from the TikTok account @bestbuddydogtrainer, which is a Maryland-based company consisting of two pros, Jeffrey Causby, CTDI, ABCDT and April Schrader, CPDT-KA.

So, why does it work? “This teaches your dog you’re coming right back," the experts share in the video.

Parents of tiny humans may find this routine familiar, as it actually follows a similar process many moms and dads use when they are sleep training their child using the Ferber Method. In those scenarios, parents extend the amount of time they allow a baby to cry in an effort to "teach" them how to sleep.

‘Brb’ Method Instructions:

1. Start by putting your dog in a comfortable room that has a door.
2. Walk out and shut the door so they are in the room alone, as if you left to run an errand. Note: They're going to bark, but you have to resist going in to comfort them. "Don’t talk or walk in until they’re 100% quiet for one second," the trainers explain.
3. Go in and give a treat to your dog to reward them for good behavior and then leave and shut the door again.
4. Now, do it multiple times in a row. "Set a three-minute timer and repeat [this step] for a full three minutes," the trainers advise. "We call this the 'Be Right Back. 'You can also work on sit to greets at the same time."

Other Dog Separation Anxiety Methods

If the 'BRB' trick doesn't work for your dog, no worries. There are other hacks you can attempt. Other methods for mild to moderate separation anxiety can include puzzle toys and treat-filled KONGs. That said, the ASPCA also reports gradual desensitization can be effective for moderate to severe separation anxiety. However, it's tricky, and your best bet is likely to consult a professional trainer.
